Alexander Technique Omaha
John Macy, P.T. and Teacher of the Alexander Technique
John will be teaching weekend Alexander Technique workshops in Omaha with Robert Rickover in May and October, 2008. Welcome.
As a Physical Therapist for the past 20 years I have worked with thousands of people with injuries that limit their ability to move and participate in life to the level they desire. In that time I have seen again and again that the discoveries and methods of F. M. Alexander are a vital component in teaching people how to help themselves to improve what they do in the world. Whether its to improve athletic performance, reduce tension and fatigue during the day or be more effective at communication the Alexander Technique provides rational means to improve human function that is based on sound anatomical, physiological and neurological principles.
My studies in the Alexander Technique began in 1979 with Pamela Black, M.D. I trained with Dr. Black until 1984 and continued study with her teacher, Marjorie Barstow through 1993. (Ms. Barstow was the first person certified by Alexander to be a teacher of his work.) I have also worked with other teachers across the country as well as in Europe and the Middle East. I am an Associate Teacher with Alexander Technique Workshops - Bring a Workshop to Your Area
The teaching I have done includes classes for the general public interested in improving their ability to move as well as specialized classes and workshops in the Technique for a variety of groups including artists, dancers, manual therapists, yoga instructors, golfers and movement professionals.
Beyond my experience with the Alexander Technique I have had extensive experience working with adult neurological injuries (such as stroke and brain injury), orthopedic rehabilitation following injury or surgical repair, and soft tissue limitations of movement particularly of the neck and back. My current therapy practice includes other specialized treatment techniques that improve the bodys ability to move, such as Myofascial Release and CranioSacral therapy, as well techniques to improve coordination and balance including muscle energy and the Stott approach to Pilates exercises. Of course, I also design and teach specific exercise programs for clients so they can regain the movement ability they desire.
